THE DOODLEBUG CLUB
For Families, Children, and Their Pets
About Us - How We Started...

The Doodlebug Club has been a dream for a long time, and it is now becoming a reality. Kim Shuford, the founder of The Doodlebug Club, has been a single parent for many years and as such knows the trials and tribulations families can go through, especially single parent homes...
Being a single parent of three boys, I remember a few Christmas' that were really tough. I was barely making enough to pay most of the bills and day care. One year we didn't have a tree, so the boys found a big branch and we leaned it up in the corner. As a parent, you try to turn it around for the kids and make a game out of it, even though on the inside it's killing you that you can't go buy them presents and can't stand the thought of them waking up Christmas morning and finding no gifts. I didn't know how to explain to them that Santa had passed them up.
It was one of these times that someone had given my name to a local Toys for Tots charity. They delivered to my home, gifts for my boys from Santa Claus. I will never forget that Christmas. At the bleakest of times when I felt like a total failure as a mother, the generosity of others made a huge impact on our lives. We even received food to cook for the day. It made us feel like a normal family and it was a wonderful day and instead of a very sad memory. No one was a failure that day. Even though it didn't change our circumstances, for that one day, our family was complete.
Ever since then, I have worked with many charities over the years to help bring Christmas to families in the Metroplex. As a returning student to college, I was President of several Honor Societies and one of the programs I started was a holiday help program. We held toy drives and tried to help as many families as we could. By this time, my sons were much older and were able to participate in these programs. One of them even went with me to deliver the toys to these families on Christmas Eve. We have also helped the Toys for Tots drives and The Salvation Army over the years. It has been my dream to start an organization to help those in our community to feel loved and special during the holidays and throughout the year.
